The Eagle’s Nest recently announced its plans to offer authentic handmade Cowichan knit hats, scarves and mittens again this year. Cowichan knitted garments are made from the raw wool of sheep. The wool contains much of its original lanolin, which makes it rain resistant and longer wearing. The wool is not dyed but is the natural wool of the white, gray and black sheep.
Knits are purchased directly from Emily Smith and family, members of the First Nations Tsartlip band of Cowichan tribes on the West Saanich Reserve on Vancouver Island. The Smiths have been knitting for over forty years and respects the traditions involved in the craft. One aspect of this tradition involves the designs, which are passed from one generation to the next and are rarely taught to anyone outside the immediate family. Eagle’s Nest will offer knit hats, scarves and mitten with eagle, bear and whale designs while supplies last.
