SPECIAL REPORT - EXECUTIVE GIFT GIVING
A gift to yourself: eliminating junk mail
If you’re looking to green up your life, here is an easy idea: Get rid of those catalogs you get in the mail every week and hardly ever open — stashing them somewhere for that “someday.”

A Web site called Catalog Choice (www.catalogchoice.org) allows consumers to sign up for a service that notifies catalog companies on their behalf to be removed from their mailing lists (and helps monitor compliance, which is voluntary). More than 180,000 people have signed up for the opt-out service since the inception of the site, sponsored by the Ecology Center. According to the Web site, more than 8 million tons of trees are consumed each year to print paper catalogs, and that doesn’t even touch on the waste it’s produced. If you’re a die-hard who doesn’t want to part with that LL Bean or Victoria’s Secret catalog, fear not — you get to complete control over which catalogs to cancel, so you don’t have to quit cold turkey.
