Employee referrals net better quality
applicants than the Internet
While a recent recruiting trends study found that employers’ corporate Web sites and general on-line job boards account for the majority of new hires, the highest quality hires still come from employee referrals, according to consultants and recruiters interviewed by the Bureau of National Affairs.

Although employers may get a larger volume of applicants through corporate Internet sites, one hiring and recruiting consultant said, “Your number one performers are still coming from employee referrals.”

New hires acquired through employee referrals are 2.5 percent more productive in their jobs, at least initially (until the referrer leaves the company), than non-referrals, a recent study found.

Moreover, employers generally do not have the HR staff to screen all of its Internet applications; many corporate Web sites are poorly designed and may be frustrating to use; and the majority of corporate Web sites fail to attract candidates who are currently employed and may be the best choice for recruiters.
