Practiced for centuries in China, the gentle art of tai chi has now become an American mainstay. Despite its deceptive gentleness, Tai Chi boasts robust health benefits, including lowered blood pressure, improved stamina and a deeper sense of relaxation.
Tai Chi is balletic in movement and consists of a series of graceful motions or poses. These are expressed in gestures that are smooth and continuous. Because it also stresses the feelings which accompany the poses, tai chi is often described as a philosophy in addition to a martial art.
According to Melanie Jo Olson, RPT, Tai Chi is unusually suited to seniors because of its focus upon balance and concentration. Tai Chi may also increase an individuals range of motion and motor control, the Harrison Silverdale physical therapist says.
Olson adds that among the most significant benefits of Tai Chi is its role in preventing falls among the elderly.
This population commonly suffers from balance problems because of poor vision, the side effects of medication and arthritis. And their health can turn catastrophically following an injury.
Basic exercise stimulates the kind of muscle and nerve communication essential to improving balance and stability, Olson explains.
Tai Chi classes are offered throughout Kitsap County, including private studios and senior centers. No matter where you study, make sure the instructor is a good fit, Olson urges. You want someone experienced who can monitor you closely. Videos may work fine once youve practiced for a while, but make sure you master basic techniques first.. |
