Approximately 30 million people in the United States have some degree of hearing loss. Four out of five Americans over age 55 have a hearing deficiency. Chances are, if your hearing is fine, you know someone who needs hearing assistance.
Common reactions to hearing loss are denial, frustration and even anger. Since hearing loss generally develops slowly, it is often a friend or family member who brings it to that ones attention, suggesting a check-up or hearing test. This can be the first step to reducing that frustration, not only for the hearing impaired, but also for those with whom that one interacts.
Scott and Diane Raszler own Hearing Advantage in North Kitsap. Both have earned Masters Degrees in Audiology and hold Certificates of Clinical Competence Audiology (M.A. CCC-A).
Scott says quality entry-level hearing aids run about $900, with the digital ones at $3,000 to $5,500 for a pair. Prices range between these.
Less expensive throwaways are advertised on television. With a rather large variety of types of hearing impairments, it is not very practical to purchase a one size fits all type of hearing aid, no matter how enticing the low price may be. Such a device is only going to give more volume, without the benefit of clarity and distinction of sound, according to Scott.
Something appropriately custom fitted will be far better than an off the shelf variety, Scott explains. To give the best correction, proper detection is essential.
Scott recommends that all adults have hearing screening during their annual physical exams. Those with hearing concerns should see a clinical audiologist for best results.
Digital hearing aids are among the newest corrective devices. They are custom designed and programmed on a computer for each individual. The basis for the specific design is the thorough examination showing the individual needs of that patient.
Digital hearing aids continually monitor the level of sound and adjust to it. Exceptionally loud sounds are softened, whereas very quiet ones are amplified.
Another recent development in hearing aids is directional microphones. If one is in a noisy environment, such as a party or restaurant, he or she can activate the directional option, which will allow for enhanced hearing in front of the person, with sounds behind the person lessened, thus reducing background noise. If not so activated, the hearing aids pick up 360-degrees of sound.
Appropriate hearing aids can add to the overall quality of a persons life. |
