In early 1980, Pete and Shelli Ohman started Sound Construction & Equipment, Inc. out of their home in Port Orchard. They later relocated to Olalla where the business thrived for 10 years. However, they often thought how convenient it would be to be back in Port Orchard — closer to most of the construction work they do.

Pete came up with an idea that what Port Orchard needed was a boat and RV storage facility as the other local storage facilities mainly catered to small spaces. They acquired 5 acres on the corner of Bethel & Van Skiver Roads and began site development.

Now open for business, half the property is used for ABC Auto, Boat & RV Storage, with the other half for Sound Construction & Equipment’s new shop location and offices.

Sound Construction and Equipment employs 10 people, and specializes in site development and underground utility construction for commercial businesses as well as foundation work, logging, drain fields, driveways, rock walls etc. for home owners and building contractors. Future plans include branching out to building metal structures similar to the storage facility. The firm employs an estimator who bids and schedules the work as well as runs all the dump trucks; excavators, bulldozers, backhoes and other vehicles needed to do their work.

ABC Storage specializes in large spaces that can be used for a variety of storage options including antique autos, or that special boat or RV; commercial and personal items such as indoor and outdoor furniture; and office equipment. ABC also offers smaller units. Unlike the conventional storage facility, it offers a “build to suit” option for special needs. The storage units have 24/7 admittance, with easy highway access. Military and payment discounts are offered and upon entering the office, visitors are greeted by “Frank” and “Olive” — the family’s daschunds.
