The banking community of Kitsap County

Our County’s banking community has something to offer for everyone. Here is an alphabetical listing of our area’s banks and what each provides.

American Marine Bank: Chartered in 1948 by Louis H. Goller, American Marine Bank (AMB) has two offices on Bainbridge Island and branch offices in Poulsbo, Port Ludlow, Seattle, and the Silverdale Bank located at 9490 Silverdale Way. AMB offers free business checking accounts and has the only Trust and Investment department in Kitsap County. Rex Townsend is the president and CEO, both titles he has held since 1998. Bank of America: Formally known as Seafirst Bank, Bank of America operates seven branches throughout Kitsap County. Branch locations include Bremerton, Silverdale, Port Orchard, Bainbridge Island and Poulsbo. Bank of America offers both consumer and commercial banking services. They also offer Saturday hours. The Port Orchard branch is one of only a handful of area banks to offer Canadian draft services and has a full service currency exchange service. Columbia Bank: With 35 branches in the Puget Sound area, Columbia Bank is headquartered in Tacoma. President and CEO is Melanie Dressel. The Kitsap branch is located in Port Orchard at the intersection of Sedgwick Road and Highway 16. The Port Orchard branch is managed by Rob Putas, with his assistant being Lynda Neshem. Frontier Bank: Formerly North Sound Bank, this bank has 39 branches in total with ones in Poulsbo, Silverdale, Port Townsend, Port Hadlock, Sequim, Port Angeles, and Bainbridge Island. They recently opened a new branch in downtown Poulsbo. Local managers have a significant degree of lending authority. The Poulsbo manager is Brent Stenman. Reach the branch at (360) 779-4800.

Key Bank: With 65 branches located throughout the South Puget Sound region, KeyBank now has five locations in Kitsap County, including Poulsbo, Silverdale, Port Orchard and Bremerton. Key’s parent company, Cleveland-based KeyCorp, is one of the nation’s largest bank-based financial services companies, with assets of approximately $81 billion.
Henry Meyer is KeyCorp’s Chairman and CEO. Key companies provide investment management, retail and commercial banking, retirement, consumer finance, and investment banking products and services to individuals and companies throughout the United States and, for certain businesses, internationally.

Kitsap Bank: Kitsap Bank is the county’s oldest and largest community bank, having been originally chartered in 1908. It is the third largest bank in the state. Headquartered in Port Orchard, it has 19 local branches. Jim Carmichael is the bank’s President. Kitsap Bank operates under the name Olympic Bank in Sequim, Port Angeles, Bonney Lake, and Federal Way. They offer online banking, among other services. Kitsap Bank’s award-winning and nationally recognized SBA department is one of the largest and most active in the nation. Kitsap Mortgage is its mortgage-lending subsidiary. With assets over $300 million, Kitsap Bank was the 12th most profitable subchapter S corporation in 2001. Kitsap Community Federal Credit Union: With over 60 ATM’s throughout our community, this credit union started out as the Navy Yard Metal Trades Credit Union. It has since expanded into a full-service credit union. Headquartered in Bremerton, it has branches in Port Orchard, Bremerton, Bainbridge Island, Bangor Keyport, Poulsbo, PSNS, and Silverdale. It recently opened up a new branch in Westpark Community Center on Russell Road in Bremerton and another one in East Bremerton at 6651 Highway 303 in front of Wal-Mart. Pacific Northwest Bank: Organized in 1989, Pacific Northwest has branches in Port Orchard, Gig Harbor, Silverdale and Poulsbo. In June of this year the former East Bremerton branch was closed and merged into the Silverdale branch. Originally part of the Interwest Bank organization which operated branches under several names statewide as they were acquired, all branches were renamed Pacific Northwest in 1999. Patrick Fahey is the president and CEO. Leo Bundick is vice president and Kitsap district manager. Pacific Northwest Bank specializes in commercial and consumer lending and has a mortgage division. Peninsula Federal Credit Union: Based in Shelton and servicing all five counties on the peninsula, Peninsula has branch offices in Port Orchard and Belfair and a loan center in Silverdale. The president and CEO is Barbara Hoag. Kim House manages the Port Orchard branch. Peninsula specializes in mortgage programs and consumer auto loans. Sterling Savings: Bainbridge Island has the only branch found in Kitsap County of this bank. The branch manager is Shaun Stephenson. Sterling Savings currently has 93 branches throughout Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Montana. The bank’s president is William Zuppe. Sterling offers a full range of commercial and consumer services. Timberland Bank: With the addition of a new branch at the corner of Mickleberry and Bucklin Hill Road last September, the bank now has two full-service branches in Kitsap. The other one is in Poulsbo. The president is Clarence Hamre. Headquartered in Hoquiam, the bank offers real estate loans, construction loans, FHA and home improvement loans. U.S. Bank: U.S. Bank’s Washington State main office is in Seattle and is managed by Phyllis Campbell. The parent company, U.S. Bancorp, is headquartered in Minnesota. There are six branches in Kitsap County including in-store branches at Alberson’s stores in Port Orchard and Gig Harbor. U.S. Bank specializes in no-fee home equity loans, no-fee checking accounts, and private financial services. Brokerage services are offered through Piper-Jaffrey. Viking Bank: Headquartered in Ballard, there are branches in Poulsbo, South Seattle, Fife, South Tacoma, and Bellevue. Joe Riley is Viking Bank’s senior vice president and the Poulsbo branch manager. The bank specializes in SBA loans plus business and personal banking. They recently began offering insurance products such as consumer and commercial life insurance, health, disability, and home. Washington’s Credit Union: With 15 branches throughout the Puget Sound area, this community-chartered credit union has branches in Port Angeles and Poulsbo. Clay Williams is the Poulsbo branch manager. Washington Credit Union can be reached at (360) 779-4488.

Washington Federal Savings: The second largest independent bank in Washington State, this institution is 84 years old and is headquartered in Seattle. It operates in eight states and has 113 branches, two of which are in Kitsap County – in East Bremerton and Poulsbo. There also is a new branch in Sequim. Stacy Nicolet manages the Bremerton branch and Larry Elfendahl manages the Poulsbo branch. Nicolet recently was voted the Affiliate of the Year by Kitsap County Association of Realtors. The bank offers residential loans, custom construction loans, land development loans and personal banking services. Washington Mutual: One of the largest banks in the nation, Washington Mutual was founded in Seattle in 1889 and helped people rebuild after the great Seattle fire. It is a full-service bank and has recently expanded its services to include small business accounts for business with between one to 25 employees. This includes checking accounts and lines of credit. It also has subsidiaries providing an array of services ranging from securities brokerage, mutual fund management, underwriting for insurance annuities, to life and property/casualty sales. Washington Mutual operates local branches in Bremerton, East Bremerton, Port Orchard, Poulsbo, Silverdale, Bainbridge Island and Belfair. There also is a mortgage loan office in Silverdale. Westsound Bank: Started originally by a group of Bremerton businesspeople in 1999, Westsound is a local community bank. The president and CEO is Dave Johnson. In December 2001 a new branch was opened in Silverdale at 9960 Silverdale Way. This branch is managed by Robert Easton, with its phone number being (360) 204-7009. The bank has also started a courier service which is an added convenience for the business person. Westsound Bank offers owner construction services and a multitude of business banking. Wells Fargo Bank: 2002 marks the 150th anniversary of Wells Fargo Bank. With 125 branches throughout Washington State, it operates branches in Bremerton, Bainbridge Island, and Silverdale. A full-service bank, Wells Fargo was ranked by Fortune Magazine in early 2002 as among the top 10 percent of America’s “most admired” companies for the second straight year.
