American Marine Bank plans major
remodel and expansion
In a move to streamline internal operations as well as re-assert itself as Bainbridge Island’s premier banking institution, American Marine Bank has announced a major expansion and facelift of its Winslow Way headquarters.

Although its trademark ship’s mast flagpole, and the clock facing the street, will remain, the main entrance which is situated a half-story below Winslow Way will be raised to street level in the new building, as will the teller lines. The single-story facade that fronts on Winslow Way will be replaced by a two-story building with three roof peaks.

Originally built in 1948, the present structure actually is comprised of three buildings. The wall where the walkup ATM machine is situated on Winslow Way was initially the eastern wall of the original building, while the part to the east of the ATM was added in 1955. What is the present teller line and the administrative area to the rear of the older buildings above the lobby, was added in 1973. The space occupied by the trust department is not owned by the bank but leased from Town and Country Market. The bank’s management is presently scattered throughout all those locations.

The original 1948 building and the 1955 addition will be demolished and rebuilt to not only increase the bank’s interior space by almost 25 percent to roughly 16,500 square feet, but it’s also designed to centralize operations. For example, the current configuration calls for visitors to the trust and mortgage loan departments to leave the building and re-enter through another door.

The only actual addition to the building will be an L-shaped addition on the west side which will encompass the area between the sidewalk and the present entry to the teller lobby. The section west of the existing front door will be extended toward the sidewalk, but only as far as the benches and flagpole. The plaza between the flagpole and sidewalk will remain untouched.

The new main entrance will be located at the western edge of the Winslow Way frontage and open to a teller line along the front of the building. To be called the customer service area, it’s designed with ambiance in mind, and will include a gas fireplace.

The entry at the rear parking lot will also be remodeled to resemble the front entry in appearance. An elevator will be installed at the rear entry to take customers either to the lobby or the trust department, and the new building will have full handicapped access.

The mortgage loan department will relocate to the present teller area and the trust department and administrative offices will move to the upper floor.

Construction, which is expected to begin early next year pending approval by the bank’s board as well as the city, should take approximately a year. It will be done in phases so the bank can remain open throughout, and so no department will have to move more than once.
