Top 10 tips for business pollution prevention
1) Call the Business Pollution Prevention (BP2) Program for technical assistance (360-692-3611) or to become EnviroStars certified.
2) Ask your supplier for less- or non-toxic products. Switch suppliers if necessary and choose to do business with EnviroStars businesses (see www.envirostars.org).
3) Try equipment or new processes that don’t generate hazardous waste (many vendors provide free trial periods).
4) Store hazardous wastes properly – under cover, on impervious ground, with labels and lids.
5) Make sure the labels identify the contents and the major risks the waste poses to employees and emergency response personnel.
6) Make sure waste containers are kept in good condition without serious rust, dents, or leaks and with properly fitting lids and bungs.
7) Avoid spills by keeping containers closed except when adding or removing wastes.
8) Ensure that your waste is delivered to a permitted collection or disposal facility.
9) Make an appointment to bring your hazardous waste to the Kitsap County Moderate Risk Waste Collection Facility (360-337-5777).
10) Keep all your waste disposal and recycling receipts and paperwork at least 5 years.
