| Private industry paid out an average of $19.85 per worker per hour for wages and benefits in March 2000, up from $19 one year earlier, according to the Labor Departments Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Wages and salaries averaged $14.49 per hour (73 percent), while benefits averaged $5.36 (27 percent).
Legally-required benefits averaged $1.67 per hour, or 7.9 percent of total civilian compensation. Average employer compensation costs were $23.55 per hour in goods-producing industries and $18.72 per hour in service-producing industries. |
