A drink to your health
Can alcohol consumption actually contribute to good health? |
According to research in the American Journal of Public Health, drinking too much can damage your brain. But having up to a drink a day can actually keep mental decline at bay as people age.
Researchers studied more than 3,500 Japanese-American men, aged 71 to 93, and found that those who had a daily drink into middle-age performed better on mental ability tests. Findings in this and other related studies:
Men who drank up to a drink a day were 40 percent less likely than teetotalers to score poorly on tests.
Men who drank more than four drinks per day, however, were 29 percent more likely than non-drinkers to have poor test scores.
Having a drink or two a day cuts the risk of Alzheimers disease in both men and women.
However, researchers warn that heavy drinkers tend to have poor mental abilities and overall health. Researchers also warn that older people who dont usually drink or are taking medication should always check with their doctors before changing their regular routines. |
