The legacy of mental illness
What did Eugene O’Neill, Vaslov Nijinsky, Ludwig Von Beethoven, Vincent Van Gogh, Leo Tolstoy, and Abraham Lincoln all have in common? After all, their backgrounds couldn’t be more diverse — they were playwrights, dancers, composers, artists, writers, revolutionary leaders. Although they all touched our lives in significant ways, they also left a legacy for future generations. They all suffered from mental illness.

Simply stated, mental illness is a brain disorder; it is more common than cancer, lung disease and heart disease combined; and, it is treatable.

Left untreated, brain disorders can profoundly disrupt one’s life. Mental illness is isolating. It affects a person’s ability to think, feel, and relate to others and to their environment. Mental illness is a devastating disease that can take away childhoods, stop careers in their tracks, and break apart families.

Kitsap Mental Health Services (KMHS) provides a full continuum of mental and behavioral health care services to children, adults and seniors affected by mental illness. This includes evaluation and assessment screenings, 24-hour crisis intervention, case management, day treatment, brief therapy, medication monitoring, protective payee services, vocational training, seminars, group or individual sessions, 24-hour residential treatment, foster care, housing assistance and help to build a strong support network and develop lasting life skills.

You can ensure treatment for people in the years to come by leaving your own legacy, no matter how large or small, to Kitsap Mental Health Services.

Playwrights, dancers, composers, artists, writers, revolutionary leaders and, yes, you, can make a difference in the lives that follow.
