| Did you hear the one about the Poulsbo business owner who picked up his phone, called the local regulatory agency and said, Hi. I want you to come out and inspect my business? No, he hadnt lost his mind. In fact, many of his friends and business associates encouraged him to do it. Some friends, huh?
Well, yes, actually. You see, his friends had already called the government requesting inspections (also known as technical assistance visits). And instead of being issued tickets for non-compliance with one regulation or another, these businesses were given help. They learned what they were doing right and what they needed to improve. They were given resources, valuable contacts, assistance in problem solving, and on-going support. They were also given the opportunity to voice their concerns and suggestions. What wasnt included in the visits? Penalties and big fat bills. No penalties because these visits are non-enforcement and no bills because there are no fees for these services. What a deal!
How can my business benefit, you ask? What do I need to do to get in on this, you wonder? Good questions. Maybe Jim Sund at North Kitsap Auto Rebuild could explain it for you. Or Joel and Nathan Baxter at B&B Auto Repair in Bremerton. If you are in Silverdale, stop by Photo Dynamics and ask Teri Munter to fill you in. These business owners are not only in the know, their businesses are among those that are EnviroStars certified.
EnviroStars in Kitsap County is run by the Bremerton-Kitsap County Health District and it certifies businesses for hazardous waste reduction and pollution prevention. By scheduling a hazardous waste technical assistance visit, reviewing operations, and setting waste reduction/pollution prevention goals, businesses earn the distinction of being environmental leaders.
Along with the hazardous waste technical assistance and the satisfaction that comes with doing the right thing, EnviroStars certification is a marketing tool to reach potential customers. The program publicly recognizes businesses through newspaper and radio ads, press releases, web sites, nominations for regional and state awards (weve had lots of winners!), special promotions, point-of-sale display items (such as a decal and framed certificate), and use of the logo in marketing.
This type of assistance is available to your business, too. Free of charge. In a hurry? The Business Pollution Prevention (BP2) Program at the Health District offers hazardous waste and industrial wastewater telephone consultations (you can even remain anonymous). We also provide technical assistance visits at your business.
So it comes down to this: Are you willing to put aside whatever reasons you might have for not picking up the phone? Are you willing to invite one of us friendly government types over for a visit? I guarantee you it will be a solid investment in your business, your employees, and the sustainability of your community.
