Battling those pesky telemarketers
By Debbie Buxton |
I am sure I am like many of you that receive numerous offers in the mail or telemarketers calling at all hours of the day (and night). I recently was given the following information to minimize the amount of junk mail and calls I receive, so thought this might be a good way to at least maybe save a tree or two in the new year. Also, encourage you to do this because of several people I have known that have had their mail stolen and the thieves used promotional offers for free credit cards/checks the person received in the mail.
In writing send a request to have your name added to a Do Not Call or Do Not Mail list to the following Direct Marketing Association divisions:
Telephone Preference Service
c/o Direct Marketing Association
PO Box 9014
Farmingdale, NY 11735-9014
Mail Preference Service
c/o Direct Marketing Association
PO Box 9008
Farmingdale, NY 11735-9008
You also want to contact the following credit bureaus and prohibit the use of your credit information for any offers of credit that you do not initiate. If you notify in writing this is a permanent prohibition of using your information. If you notify by the telephone it only prevents them from giving your information out without your consent for 2 years.

Finally, if you are married, divorce, or changed names make sure and include all your names used. Also if you are married you may want to send separate letters for each of you.
