Local discount real estate brokerage opens
Washington Discount Realty, co-owned by Frank “Skip” Butcher and Teri Tennyson, now offer a commission’s package which include a flat one percent listing commission, or a $595 Northwest Multiple Listing Service (NWMLS) advertising fee for the “For Sale by Owner.”

Currently, to sell a $300,000 home with a six percent commission, a home owner would pay $18,000 in commissions but with Washington Discount Realty the home owner will pay $12,000 or less, have full representation and NWMLS advertising.

UBS to Acquire Piper Jaffray Companies

UBS announced recently that it will acquire the private client branch network of Piper Jaffray Companies for $500 million in cash. The transaction is expected to close at the beginning of the third quarter, subject to regulatory approval. Sterling Financial Reports Decline in Earnings
Sterling Financial Corp., the Spokane-based holding company for Sterling Savings Bank, which operates a branch on Bainbridge Island, announced that first-quarter net income of $15.4 million, or 44 cents a diluted share, down from $15.9 million, or 45 cents a share, in the year-earlier period.

Sterling reported total assets of $7.8 billion at the end of the first quarter, up 12 percent. Total loans increased 20 percent, to $5.25 billion, and total deposits increased 24 percent to $5.1 billion.

Lawmakers propose .xxx domain
Senators Max Baucus (D-Montana) and Mark Pryor (D-Arkansas) have proposed the Cyber Safety for Kids Act, a bill that would require the creation of a .xxx top-level domain.

The law would require websites in the business of distributing adult material to register and host all adult material at the .xxx domain, instead of using any of the current top-level domains (such as .com, .net, .biz or others). Those who fail to use the .xxx domain would be subject to civil penalties by the Department of Commerce. The bill has not yet been introduced.
