Lawrence L Craig Architects is designing a new building for the Northwest School of Wooden Boatbuilding in Port Hadlock, which, as its name implies, teaches the art and craft of building wooden boats. The approximately 10,000 square foot building encompasses two stories, includes a mezzanine, and will be of sustainable design including:
- The steel building shell and structural framework is made of completely recycled material.
- Natural light will be used as much as possible and only augmented with electrical lighting when necessary. Lights will be turned on and off with light sensors.
- The heating system will be geo-thermal radiant heating in the concrete slab. This system will get its heat from the earth and will give the building all the heat it needs for the vast majority of the year.
- Rain water will be collected from the roof and will be used to flush toilets and provide irrigation for outdoor plants.
- The site itself is an old gravel pit that will be restored with native plant materials.
The Northwest School of Wooden Boatbuilding is beginning a campaign to raise the funds necessary to complete construction of this facility. In order to reach its goal, the school will have to raise almost $2 million.
