New architecture firm focuses on sustainability
Matthew Coates has recently launched a new architecture and design practice, Coates Design, Inc. on Bainbridge Island. He hopes to offer his sustainable design expertise to a diverse, yet progressive clientele and brings to the table award winning ideas about sustainable homes of the future.

Coates recently won an international design competition to envision a sustainable home of the future. His design was selected by an all-star jury out of nearly 700 entries from over 40 countries. “More and more people are looking for ways to incorporate sustainability into their homes as a way to offset or reverse the depletion of natural resources.  Implementing these ideas isn’t necessarily more costly or impractical, but that tends to be a common misconception. Good, responsible design can heighten your awareness while contributing to a ‘greener’ planet and it does not need to cost a fortune.” said Coates.  “New innovative materials and technologies are making building ‘green’ a breeze.” he added.

Coates’ own home, recently featured in Pacific Northwest Magazine, is a demonstration of his design convictions and has been a valuable tool in the “discovery process”, as he puts it.  Coates Design offers a full range of services including architecture, planning, design and consulting, and can be reached at (206) 780-0876 or at www.coatesdesign.com.
