Milgard, Callan recognized for leadership

Gary Milgard, president and CEO of Milgard Manufacturing, Inc., has been named a winner of the Lifetime Achievement Award presented by the University of Washington, Tacoma Business Administration Program.

Josi Callan, director and CEO of the Museum of Glass, was the winner of the Rising Star Award. Milgard and Callan and eight other business leaders were honored Jan. 30.

The winners were selected from a group of 21 nominees. Milgard and his father started Milgard Glass Company in 1958 in a small building in Tacoma. Within four years, the Milgards had diversified into aluminum windows and Gary left to start his own aluminum window fabricating company.

Milgard was named Washington State Entrepreneur of the Year in 1994.

As leader of the new Museum of Glass, Josi Callan has helped develop a renewed sense of pride in downtown Tacoma. Callan selected the museum’s inaugural exhibitions, tracked the building’s design and construction and established the educational programming that defines the museum’s role in the community.

Judges considered nominees’ contributions to the individual’s field of business, the region’s business climate and the community at large. Judges for the award included members of the UWT Business Advisory Board, Business Administration faculty and Jeff Rounce, publisher of the Pierce County Business Examiner.
