Bainbridge Island architect’s work
featured in national arts publication

Bainbridge Island’s Cutler Anderson Architects Norfolk Armed Forces Memorial was featured in a new publication from the National Endowment for the Arts.

“The Mayors’ Institute, Excellence in City Design” is a publication that targets mayors across the United States promoting excellence in urban design.

The Norfolk Armed Services Memorial is a collaboration between Cutler Anderson and Bainbridge Island Artist Maggie Smith. Located on the Norfolk waterfront, the memorial includes bronze letters written by members of the Armed Forces from the Revolutionary war to the Gulf war. They appear to be carried by the breeze across the plaza,

The publication notes, “Memorials are among the most difficult structures to design. But some truly moving evocations of grief, hope, and unity of national purpose have come out of what can be protracted periods of controversy during design.”

This is the second memorial completed by this collaboration of architect and artist. Bainbridge Island’s new City Hall is also featured as an expression of excellent public building design.
