Kitsap Mall 8 survives General closures
Chain shutters two theaters in Pierce, but
Silverdale theater stays open.
It’s no secret that competition for the moviegoer’s dollar is fierce, and in the last decade theater chains have tried to outbuild each other, attempting to give the patron a more satisfying movie experience. No where is that more evident than here. However, that competition has begun to catch up to the chains.
Movie theater construction nationwide has exceed the demand and the nation is now “over-screened.” Approximately 14,000 theaters have been built in the last 10 years, even though the number of people actually going to the movies has stayed about the same.
Kitsap County however, seems to be an exception. Although new multi-screen theaters in Poulsbo and Winslow threatened to draw some of the movie-going business away from Silverdale, business remains brisk in Central Kitsap.
That’s why although General Cinemas has closed numerous theaters nationwide, the Kitsap Mall 8 will remain open. The Massachusetts-based company will close two theaters in Pierce County with more closings to be announced.
The financial impact of that over-saturation caused General Cinemas to declare Chapter 11 bankruptcy earlier in this year, along with other theater companies such as United Artists and Mann. General has closed 36 theaters in the past two months, while consolidating some units and pulling out of other markets altogether.
