“Business in the Green”
Poulsbo general contractor John Willett and Associates is the latest local firm to qualify as a Distinguished Business in the Green under Kitsap County’s Green Works program.

To do so, the company had to meet program criteria in waste reduction, recycling, and buying recycled for both it’s office and construction projects.

Willett has been using sustainable construction techniques for the past 20 years and many of its green strategies have roots in money saving ideas. This includes designing structures for a minimum of waste and ordering materials in specific sizes and lengths.

Willett also finds new uses for old materials such as windows, doors and plumbing fixtures on remodel jobs. He saves hardwood flooring, siding, and framing lumber whenever possible and reuses them in other projects. Metals and cardboard from the construction sites are always recycled, as well as the paper from his home-based office.

He also uses ceiling beams made from glue-laminated woods harvested from small trees and timbers salvaged from demolition projects, minimizing the impact on forests.

Willett uses paints and coatings that are low in volatile organic compounds (VOCs) protecting his workers as well as the homeowner. He stressed the fact that today, many homeowners are actively seeking better indoor air quality to match their health-conscious lifestyles. Willett purchases these products locally and in Seattle.
