| Freedom of speech may be the mantra of the Kitsap Regional Library Board but when I stood outside the Poulsbo library one morning the police were called. I was there to alert parents with minor children of the possible dangers from accidental exposure to pornography and sex offenders. I was neither rude or disruptive, nor did I block the entrance to the building. The police agreed.
While the library board attempts to explain their Internet policy and Albert Einstein's awe of technology, (N.K. Herald 7/11/01), the children of this county are unprotected. While they tell everyone the children's computers are filtered they do not tell you that any child of any age can use any terminal in the building.
It is not censorship to want illegal material filtered from public computers. The First Amendment does not protect obscenity or child pornography. Taxpayers should not be expected to pay for it. Minors should be protected from it.
On June 19, 2001 the board voted "not to provide parents of minor children with the choice to limit their children's Internet access to filtered terminals." So much for pro-choice. I just thought the parents ought to know!
