Local couple nominated for
2005 Jefferson Award
Kathleen Barantes

Two hundred people, including a Poulsbo couple, were nominated this year for Jefferson Awards in Washington State. The awards honor the work of individuals in service to others and are sponsored this year by the Seattle Post-Intelligencer and The Boeing Co.

Five will be announced as Jefferson Award medallion recipients and recognized at a luncheon. One of the winners will represent the people of Washington State at a national awards ceremony in Washington, D.C., in June.

This year’s nominees feed the hungry, work to preserve our environment, support cancer patients, provide legal help to homeless women and dedicate their time to children.

Nominated from Kitsap County were Luis and Kathleen Barrantes of Poulsbo. The Barrantes’ volunteer efforts have helped to draw attention to cleanup opportunities in multiple jurisdictions in Liberty Bay. They have worked with many organizations, including the state Department of Transportation, local Eagle Scouts and waterfront septic tank owners to spearhead environmental restoration and education projects.

Kathleen Barrantes also writes an ongoing environmental column for the Business Journal.
