Atkinson, who is well known in Kitsap County, has a background that includes over twenty years in broadcasting including serving as the first general manager of KITZ. He also operated his own advertising agency, Image Trends, and headed the Bremerton Main Street Association for eight years.

In his new position, Atkinson will be responsible for the day-to-day operation of the Chamber. The organization has over 300 members and occupies a unique position in the North Mason Community, which has no incorporated cities. As a result, many people look to the chamber for ideas, leadership and communication in the business community. The chamber serves an area stretching from Belfair, Allyn, Victor, Tahuya, Union, Grapeview and Dewatto.
