| Key.com, the Web site of Key Bank, recently announced a pilot program of wireless banking that includes compatibility with the Palm V and VII series of PDAs. While the Palm VII is the only PDA with a wireless capability offered as a standard feature, the Palm V can be enabled quickly and inexpensively with a Mobile Internet Kit.
Keys wireless services are also available using an Internet enabled cell phone. There are currently more than 2.5 million mobile wireless subscribers in the U.S., and the market is projected to grow at an accelerated rate.
Keys wireless service allows customers to view balance and transaction history, schedule same-day bill payment, make account transfers between checking and savings and request stock quotes.
Initially, account inquiries and stock quote requests each represented about 40 percent of transactions. As the customer base has grown, stock quotes have become 70 percent of total transactions indicating Key customers are using this new technology to keep close tabs on volatile stock markets.
There is no charge for wireless service from Key, but customers are responsible for their airtime charges from device providers. Key is offering the service in response to customer feedback indicating an interest, and for customers to access real time information at their convenience. Key will use information gathered from the pilot program to evaluate future offerings. |
