Through a grant from the Windermere Foundation, 24 students from Bainbridge High School spent a week studying marine science on board a 61’ sailing research vessel in the San Juan Islands, on a program run by Bainbridge-based Salish Sea Expeditions.
“The generous support of Windermere Real Estate employees, along with other Bainbridge Island residents, is crucial in ensuring that our programs are accessible to all,” said Stephen Streufert, executive director of Salish Sea Expeditions. “Science and innovation are critical to the future of our local economy. Experiential educational opportunities like ours are hugely beneficial in sparking the interest that leads kids to pursue careers in science.”
The program participants are 11th and 12th grade students in Tom Armentrout’s marine biology class. The Salish program gives the students the opportunity to develop and test a scientific hypothesis and prediction by conducting original field research from the sailing vessel. Students also learn sailing and navigation, and take responsibility for planning all aspects of their trip, including meals. Said Armentrout, “The genuine excitement and pride that goes with discovery and self-discovery is such an important part of learning. I would rank Salish as the best educational experience that I’ve ever been able to provide my students.”
“We’re very pleased to assist Salish Sea Expeditions so that cost is not an obstacle to the students who want to participate with this wonderful organization, said Eve Leonard, foundation representative at Windermere. “We whole-heartedly support their efforts and mission.”
