Electronic waste recycling event set
It seems that all households have it; a stash of old outdated televisions, stereo equipment, computers, monitors or printers in their garage or basement, waiting to be thrown out. But finding the time and locating the correct spot to dispose of them responsibly can be a challenge. Mark your calendar for Saturday, April 26, and bring your old electronic equipment for recycling to Christ Memorial Church parking lot, at 18901 8th Avenue, in Poulsbo.

Olympic Printer Resources, Inc. of Kingston and EcycleNW of Sequim have teamed up with Christ Memorial Church, Sound Publishing, Prowse & Associates and United Rentals to sponsor a Community Electronic Waste Recycling Day on Saturday, April 26, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

A portion of the collection fees from the event will be donated to the Impact Basque’s Summer in the USA program that finds hospitable families for Basque students from Spain and France to visit our area during the month of July. The students will have an opportunity to increase English fluency, experience American culture and explore Christianity. A similar event held at Central Market in Poulsbo in July 2007 collected almost 42,000 pounds of electronic waste and raised $1050 to support the reopening of the Poulsbo Marine Science Center.

Items accepted will be: televisions, monitors, printers, computers, copiers, stereo components, VCR/DVD players, telephones, household batteries and cell phones. Collection fees range from $9 for phones up to $44 dollars for large console televisions. Very large copiers, power supplies and batteries will be charged by the pound. Collected items will be disassembled and recycled into their component parts and resold to certified processors who adhere to U.S. export control regulations regarding the safe handling of Electronic Waste. About 98 percent of the material brought in will be reclaimed and kept out of our landfills.

“We think this gives people a wonderful opportunity to do the right thing and be green with these old items,” says Pete DeBoer, Olympic Printer Resources, Inc. founder and president. “Our company has been about recycling for fifteen years. Last year alone we kept 83 tons of plastic and electronic equipment out of landfills with our printer cartridge remanufacturing operations and electronic waste collection efforts. It just makes sense for us to help keep these products from just being thrown away as well as helping out Impact Basque’s ministry program.”
