| The 2007 Kitsap County Youth Conference, held recently at the president's hall, was an overwhelming success. Sponsored by Mothers Against Drunk Driving of Kitsap County (MADD), the conference gave 115 Kitsap County Junior High students the chance to learn the consequences of using illegal drugs, alcohol and tobacco. The students then used their new knowledge to create and implement Local Team Action Planning projects at their schools.
MADD member Betty Skinner, of Betty Skinner Allstate Agency, has helped organize the event for over five years. She said, We want to get the information out to them to help them make the right choice before they make the wrong choice.
One of the many presentations at this years conference was called Choice and Consequence. RN Colleen Williams, with the assistance of her mother, Marylou Hoidal, used real human organs to educate the youth about the benefits of choosing wisely. There were organs of a healthy teen who was killed by a drunken driver, as well as unhealthy organs of tobacco, alcohol and drug users. Participants were able to touch and get a close look at the organs to see how disease and destruction can harm them.
