New poll shows Rossi and Gregoire
in statistical tie
Under 50 percent threshold, Gregoire is vulnerable to defeat
Nearly two thirds of respondents say state is headed in wrong direction

A new, recently released survey of likely Washington State voters shows 2004 Republican gubernatorial nominee Dino Rossi in a statistical dead heat with incumbent Democratic Governor Christine Gregoire in a hypothetical rematch.

The poll, which was conducted by Strategic Vision, pegs Rossi at 45 percent with Gregoire ranked at only 47 percent — under the critical 50 percent margin an incumbent needs to not be considered vulnerable to upset.

The poll, which surveyed 800 voters and has a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percent, also showed that 8 percent of likely voters are undecided.

“Governor Gregoire is one of the most vulnerable incumbent governors in the country,” said Washington State Republican Party Chairman Luke Esser. “Governor Gregoire has dramatically increased state spending in an attempt to increase her poll numbers but she’s still stuck in a dead heat.”

What is even more interesting is that the poll also found a significant majority (64 percent) of state voters said that Washington is headed in the wrong direction, while just 29 percent responded that the state is moving in the right direction.

“Washington voters clearly want a change and that’s bad news for an incumbent whose administration has preformed as poorly as Governor Gregoire’s,” added Esser. “That desire for change is especially significant because Governor Gregoire’s party overwhelmingly controls the legislature as well as the governor’s office.”

Meanwhile, the Washington State Republican Party’s 30th Annual Fall Dinner event, held on Oct. 10, which was headlined as the “Run Dino Run!” event, produced the highest turnout the state party has ever seen.

There was no response to a request for comment from the Governor’s office.
