Bremerton neighborhoods get out the vote
to support levy on Nov. 6
By Kathleen Byrne-Barrantes
Over this past spring, and at summer’s end, the majority of Bremerton citizens said they want more than its Parks budget can offer. This November they will have a chance to “walk their talk” by voting YES on Proposition 1.

“The levy will accomplish three things — renovate neighborhood parks, repair sidewalks, and embark on a community improvement program,” said Wyn Birkenthal, Director of Bremerton’s Parks and Recreation Department.

“Bremerton Parks are old and worn and there has been no capital reinvestment for parks that were constructed between 1954 and 1978,” added Birkenthal, “absent the levy; I don’t see the ability to renovate these parks in the near future.”

Funding provide through the levy will improve current facilities and add future parks.

Park improvements would include the Warren Avenue Playfield, Kiwanis Park, Forest Ridge Park, Lions Park, Anderson Cove, Bataan Park, 17th and Ironsides, and Bachmann Park as shown on the map.

Sidewalk repairs and new construction will be determined through the public outreach portion of the City’s non-motorized transportation plan.

The levy will also improve park maintenance, renovate restrooms, and add new facilities.
