Town & Country Market celebrates
50 years in business
By Shauna Kroeger
Bainbridge Island’s Town & Country Market recently celebrated its 50th anniversary with a Picnic in the Park Anniversary Party, along with events and cake inside the store.

The picnic included live music throughout the day, games for children, and, of course, a picnic that afternoon. Fireworks over Eagle Harbor ended the night. Inside the store, cake was given out all morning while events such as the community art project were happening throughout the day.

This first Town & County Market location was opened by three sons of grocery veterans- Ed Loverich, and John and Mo Nakata. These three men, sons of two friends who ran consignment grocery stores, combined their efforts to open the island’s first supermarket on August 29th, 1957.

The three young men ironically opened their supermarket on the lot where they used to play ball as children.

During the past 50 years, Town & Country Market Inc. has grown to encompass over 900 employees and six supermarkets — including three Central Market stores. The two original families who opened the first market 50 years ago are still owners and employees today.

The owners of Town & Country Market, Inc. recognize the community members as their ingredient for success.

“It’s all about the connections,” said one of the founder’s sons in their 50th anniversary newsletter. It’s the “essence of that longevity, the primary ingredient of the success.”

Town & Country Market is located on 343 Winslow Way in Bainbridge Island. To learn more about Town & Country Market, Inc. and to read the 50th anniversary newsletter, visit www.townandcountrymarkets.com.
