Acceptable documentation for Form I-9
The current Form I-9 was revised in 2005 to recognize the Department of Homeland Security’s authority to enforce regulations of the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986. If you are relying on the “Lists of Acceptable Documents” that appear on the current or any other version of the Form I-9 to determine which documents to accept as proof of identity and employment eligibility, you may want to reconsider that decision.

The revised Form I-9 failed to update the “Lists of Acceptable Documents” to reflect those that have either been deleted or added. No matter what version of the Form I-9 you are using, you need to remain aware of the acceptable documents and make sure those responsible for viewing the documents are aware of the changes.

The list below highlights those documents that appear on the current Form I-9 that are no longer considered acceptable, plus one document that does not appear that can establish both identity and employment eligibility.

Delete from List A:

2. Certificate of U.S. Citizenship (Form N560 or N561)
3. Certificate of Naturalization (Form N-550 or N-570)
5. Form I-151 of Permanent Resident Card or Alien Registration Receipt Card with photograph. Note: Form I-551 is still acceptable
8. Unexpired Re-entry Permit (Form I-327)

Add to List A:
10. Employment Authorization Document (Form I-766)
