| The Kitsap County Board of Commissioners, in conjunction with its annual Earth Day Awards, recently announced that Port Orchard-based Wet Apple Media, publishers of the Kitsap Peninsula Business Journal, WestSound Home & Garden Magazine, Remodel Kitsap Magazine and Kitsap Peninsula Builder, has been selected to receive the Outstanding Achievement in Environmental Education Community award.
For the past seven years, the Business Journal has published an environmental section as a regular part of its editorial coverage. It is the only business newspaper in the state to do so. The goal of the section is to educate the business community on local environmental issues of concern. A column written by Poulsbo environmental activist Kathleen Byrne-Barrantes, head of the Liberty Bay Foundation, has been an integral part of that section, as well as public recognition of local EnviroStars, along with regular information about recycling, salmon enhancement, conservation techniques and green building. The company is a strong promtor of the Homebulders Association of Kitsap Countys Built Green program in all its publications, and designed the programs logo.
WestSound Home & Garden also regularly includes articles on environmentally-friendly gardening, recycling, conservation, Green building, low impact construction and remodeling techniques, as well as profiles of local people making a difference in keeping the Kitsap Peninsula an environmental showcase.
In addition, the company prints all its magazines on recycled paper using soy-based inks. It also has an internal recycling program in place for paper, cardboard and packaging materials, as well as for plastic, glass and aluminum containers. In an effort to reduce the use and flow of paper, Wet Apple also offers its clients electronic billing and payment options as well.
The award will be presented on Mon. April 23 at 10 a.m. at the Kitsap County Administration Building, located at 614 Division Street, in Port Orchard.
