Commercial construction projects continue to proliferate on the Kitsap Peninsula. Here is a sampling of projects going on throughout the area.
Gig Harbor
Franciscan Health Systems is making headway on its new 80-bed Saint Anthonys Hospital, which will be located in Gig Harbor. The company won approval from the Gig Harbor City Council this summer for a comprehensive plan change that could clear the way for a construction start on the hospital, which has been in the works since 2005, to begin March 2007.
MultiCare is also expanding its medical facilities in Gig Harbor with the construction of its new MultiCare Gig Harbor Medical Park, scheduled to open sometime around the end of 2006 or early 2007.
Costco has announced plans to build as well but is keeping mum on the progress of the project until some permitting issues are resolved.

Cavalon Place in Silverdale, an office condominium complex being built in the Highland Business Park, expects completion of the projects two buildings this winter. |
South Kitsap
Work on the downtown marquee has been temporarily stalled out due to the recent discovery of extensive wood rot in the marquees columns. It is estimated that at least 15 of the marquees 24 columns would need to be fixed, and that materials beneath the street could also be affected by the rot. The city is currently pondering solutions.
Construction on the new Franciscan Professional Building at 451 Sedgwick Road was recently completed and the site opened for business in August. Included in the buildings tenants are a family care practice and a physical therapy practice, run by Franciscan Health Systems.
Three separate mixed-use retail/condominium projects are also in the works all within sight of each other in the sleepy little village of Manchester. One was recently withdrawn for some planning revisions, but is expected to be presented to the Hearing Examiner later this year.
A condominium office project on the drawing board for the intersection of Tremont Street and Pottery Avenue cleared the first hurdle when the Port Orchard Planning Commission recommended approval of a Comp Plan change to allow the necessary zoning. The project is currently waiting for the city to finalize plans for the widening of the intersection including the possibility of a two lane roundabout so design of the project can be finalized.
Bremerton
The Harborside Condominium complex is nearing completion, and the final beam was raised in a ceremony in early August. Nearly 70 percent of the two buildings 78 units have been sold and condo owners are expected to move in starting January 2007.
Phase two of the Harborside development, which would include a six-story condominium complex and 114-room hotel in downtown Bremerton along the citys already booming waterfront, is also in the works. Alan Lurie, builder and owner of upscale, boutique hotels, entered into an agreement with the Kitsap County Consolidated Housing Authority earlier to develop the project.
Before the buildings can go up, however, the project will focus on building an underground garage, an undertaking that will be shared by Lurie and the Port of Bremerton, which will be contributing resources to the garage project in order to secure parking spaces for the new 350-slip marina the Port is developing along the Bremerton waterfront.
Meanwhile, the private condominium development, The 400, is moving forward on the 66-unit condominium complex, with construction well underway. Developer Mark Goldberg, who also built the recently completed, sold-out Bridge townhome development in Bremerton, secured $22.5 million in funding for the 400 earlier this year, and it is expected that owners will be able to move into the building in winter 2006.
In East Bremerton, a new office complex is taking shape on McWilliams, just up the street from the East Bremerton Safeway, and along Kitsap Way two major projects are various stages of completion: a new Rite Aid drug store, as well as a new assisted living facility located near Westpark. Parametrix also recently moved into itsnewly completed offices on Kitsap Way.
Silverdale
Cavalon Place, an office condominium complex being built in the Highland Business Park, is well under construction and completion of the projects two buildings is expected this winter. The majority of the business park land, which is located along Myhre Road and bordered by Bucklin Hill Rd.and Ridgetop Blvd., is currently owned by Chuck and JoAnne Haselwood. Earlier this year, Rich Rucker of the Rucker Group, which manages the property for the Haselwoods, reported that a purchase and sale agreement on the north pad, closest to Ridgetop, was fairly close to being finalized. A fourth pad is being reserved for either retail development or for a third Cavalon Place building, depending on the success of the first phase of the project.
The final pad, approximately 1.5 acres along Bucklin Hill Road, is currently being held for a nice restaurant.
FPH Construction also has several projects in the works in Silverdale, with three buildings two sold and one leased going in at the corner of Blaine and Ridgetop.
Further down the road, the Oxford Suites hotel chain is finally back to work on its new, 100-plus-bed hotel on Silverdale Way, near the Reid Real Estate building. The long-delayed hotel is currently expected to open for business summer 2007.
Poulsbo
About 40 acres of land is currently being cleared along the intersection of Highways 3 and 305 to make way for a 185-home neighborhood, to be called Parkside. The planned community will be the first housing offered as part of the Olhava development, officially known as College MarketPlace.
Construction continues on the Poulsbo Place II project, which will add an additional 140 homes to Poulsbos well-known planned housing community. The projects Division 5 is the first to offer homes for sale, and is almost 100 percent sold out, according to the projects Web site.
Kingston
Groundbreaking for two new buildings in downtown Kingston the first to be built in around 20 years took place in August along Highway 104. Homeland Construction owner Rick Lanning owns the properties and plans to build each commercial building to house four 260-square-foot spaces that will be leased to tenants.
Bainbridge Island
Harbor Square, a 180-unit complex located on 4.6 acres across from the ferry landing, with room for ground floor retail and underground parking, is wrapping up the first phase of construction, recently receiving its certificate of completion for phase one. The first residents of the mixed-use development are moving in now.
Vineyard Lane, another large housing development being built on the land formerly occupied by Bainbridge Island Vineyards and Winery, is currently selling units. The development, touted as being created for people who want to live a well-balanced life, gracefully, by sustaining the environment and supporting each other, has received some attention for its commitment to green building and its community-oriented design. Units range from flats and penthouses to cottages and townhomes, and the development will feature a unique community center known as The Willow, which offers a community gathering space, on-site catering and bed and breakfast services, among other amenities. |
