Tacoma Mall to get “Extreme Makeover”
Tacoma Mall, which was originally built in 1966, will soon be getting a major facelift. The work will be done in two phases and take most of the next three years.

According to the Simon Property Group, Inc., operators of the mall, Seattle-based Nordstrom Inc. will build a new, two-story, 144,000-square-foot store on the site currently occupied by Mervyns, which will soon be closing all its Washington stores. The existing store will be torn down, while the high-end retailer continues operating at its current site until construction of the new store is completed. It’s scheduled to open in Fall 2008 in time for the holiday shopping season.

The second phase will be the demolition of the current Nordstrom store and the construction of 60,000 square feet of retail space there, likely to begin in 2008.

The rest of the mall work will be a two-phase, multi-year, multi-million dollar project. The first phase, scheduled to start early next year, will feature a 45,000-square-foot expansion near the food court on South 46th Street that will become a “lifestyle center.” Similar projects have been successful at Alderwood Mall and The Promenade, currently under construction at Olympia’s Capital Mall. Seven to eight new stores and restaurants will be located in the lifestyle center.

The names of tenants to be located in the lifestyle center will soon be released.
