Kilmer announces run
for 26th District Senate seat
State Representative Derek Kilmer (D-Gig Harbor) has announced that he will seek election to the State Senate from the 26th Legislative District. Kilmer, who was elected as State Representative in 2004, is running for the seat vacated by retiring State Senator Bob Oke.

“I feel like I have made a real impact on many of our priorities. I am excited about the possibility to get more done in the State Senate,” said Derek Kilmer. “In the years ahead, we’ll need strong leadership in the Senate to fight for our priorities and get results. I will continue to fight for more local jobs, better education for our kids, and our fair share of transportation dollars.”

“Two years ago, the voters of our area decided they wanted a change. They wanted someone who could get things done on issues they care about,” Kilmer added. “In 2004 and four times now, voters in our area have decided that Lois McMahan isn’t that person. I’m confident and hopeful that, when voters compare our records this Fall, they will make the same decision.”

Congressman Norm Dicks endorsed Kilmer’s candidacy, saying, “Derek Kilmer is someone who gets things done. He’s focused on the right issues — like growing more local jobs — and he’s making terrific progress. He has my full support.”

In addition to the endorsement by Dicks, Kilmer’s candidacy has already been endorsed by – among others – Bremerton Mayor Cary Bozeman, Port Orchard Mayor Kim Abel, Gig Harbor Mayor Chuck Hunter, Kitsap County Prosecutor Russ Hauge, Bremerton City Council member Carol Arends, Port of Bremerton Commissioners Bill Mahan and Mary Ann Huntington, Port Orchard City Council members John Clauson, Fred Chang, Carolyn Powers, and Rita DiIenno, and numerous teachers, business leaders, and other community leaders.

Kilmer lives with his wife, Jen, in Gig Harbor. Both are members of Rotary and of the Gig Harbor United Methodist Church. They are expecting their first child later this month.
