Stagner announces run for County Auditor
Steve Stagner

Port Orchard resident Steve Stagner has announced his intention to run for the office of Kitsap County Auditor in November — a post held by Democrat Karen Flynn for the past 20 years.

Stagner, who will run as a Republican, believes it’s time for change in the auditor’s office, and that someone with a different skill set and practical, private sector financial industry knowledge is needed. He will bring over 25 years of hands-on work experience in finance and economics to the position, having served as an investment advisor, small business owner, and mortgage banker.

Stagner has also served as the South Kitsap representative on the Kitsap Public Facilities District Board since 2002 and its treasurer since 2003. During 2005 he served as Chief Financial Officer of the new summer collegiate baseball team, the Kitsap BlueJackets.

“The auditor’s position is very important, as it sets the tone for the honesty and cohesiveness, of the financial arm of the county,” he stated. “It’s just been business as usual at the courthouse for way too long.”

As a member of the county’s finance committee, Stagner promises to be much more visible than the current auditor and responsive to the citizens of Kitsap County. He plans to accomplish this by holding public meetings were he will outline the financial condition of the county to residents on a regular basis. He believes his expertise in asset/liability management coupled with his accomplished public speaking skills will be invaluable in communicating with the citizens.

Stagner says he also wants to work with the 38 other country auditors to bring about election reform that will balance convenience with security. In light of revelations arising from the 2004 governor’s race, he believes it is absolutely mandatory to restore the voter’s confidence in the integrity of the voter registration system and the entire election process.

Lastly, Stagner wants to utilize advances in technology and innovation not only within the Auditor’s office, but also on an interdepartmental basis to improve efficiencies and communications.
