Key Peninsula News executive editor Rodika Tollefson was recognized with a Media Awareness Award by the Tacoma Pierce County DUI Task Force for consistent coverage of safety and funding issues on State Route 302. Tollefson was among 22 individuals recognized at the Night of 1,000 Stars award ceremony in December that included eight categories, ranging from Good Samaritan to Law Enforcement. KOMO 4 Television News reporter Keith Eldridge was also recognized with a Media Awareness Award, which is given for regular or exceptional coverage of traffic safety issues.
The Key Peninsula News is a nonprofit monthly newspaper covering the Key Peninsula, and is staffed in large part by volunteers. Tollefson, who has been the newspaper's executive editor since February 2003, is also a reporter for the Kitsap Peninsula Business Journal.
The Tacoma Pierce County DUI Task Force was created in 1983 by former Gov. Booth Gardner, who was the Pierce County Executive at the time, and DNR Commissioner of Public Lands Doug Sutherland, then-Mayor of Tacoma. The safety awards celebration, which included a keynote address by Washington State Patrol Chief John Batiste, ended with a candlelight vigil remembering victims of drunken driving in Pierce County. |
