Giving the Big Green gift
There is one last gift to be given when the holiday season is over. It doesn't require ribbons and bows, comes straight from the heart, and happens to be the color green: It's the perpetual gift of recycling. And it's a gift that continues even after all the decorations are taken down.

Many of the gifts on your loved ones' holiday wish lists this year are, undoubtedly, the latest and greatest in wireless gadgets and cordless electronic products, including laptops, digital cameras, MP3 players, cordless power tools, remote controlled toys ... the list goes on and on.

One thing these products have in common is that they require rechargeable batteries. Cell phones also contain rechargeable batteries and they, too, can and should be recycled.

The Rechargeable Battery Recycling Corporation (RBRC), a nonprofit public service organization dedicated to cell phone and rechargeable battery recycling, can help. RBRC's program, Call2Recycle, provides collection boxes for old cell phones and used rechargeable batteries at national retailers across the country.

So, if you plan on exchanging a high-tech gadget this season, remember to give the greenest gift of all - recycle your rechargeable batteries through the Call2Recycle program.

Just call toll free (877) 2-RECYCLE, or visit www.call2recycle.org to find the nearest drop off location at one of RBRC's nationwide sponsoring retailers. Participants include The Home Depot, Lowe's, Office Depot, RadioShack, Target, and more.

And, if you are feeling especially merry this holiday season, share these simple tips from RBRC so your loved ones can get the most out of their techie gifts:

  • Abide by the charging guidelines provided by the manufacturer. There are specific initial battery charging times for each individual product. Follow these guidelines before using the products.
  • Never return a fully-charged battery to the charger for an extra boost. This will shorten the life of the battery. Instead, recharge batteries only when they are near to fully discharged.
  • Let a discharged battery cool to room temperature before recharging.
