Sinclair Inlet cleanup at Bremerton Boardwalk is Saturday, Sept. 10. It is usually held on the 3rd Saturday in September (Sept. 17) at the downtown Bremerton Boardwalk, next to the ferry terminal, as part of an International Beach Cleanup Day.
They typically clean along waterfront roadsides in Bremerton and Port Orchard. Divers are encouraged to join in the effort. Its a fairly easy dive, mild current sometimes, but have to watch your depth and avoid getting near ferry lanes, said Donald Larson, Kitsap Diving Association (KDA) & Washington SCUBA Alliance (WSA). Laurie Allen (360-871-8452, lovingrio@msn.com, cell 360-204-9332) is interested in organizing Environmental Learning Experiences for teenage International Exchange Student Volunteers and their host families that live in the Puget Region (from Olympia, WA to North of Seattle). She will supervise students during the upcoming 2005-2006 school year. Students will be arriving in late August 2005 and live in the Puget Sound Region for the school year.
The non-profit KITSAP TREES VOLUNTEERS (www.kitsaptrees.com) has expressed an interest in working with the students to help plant trees and other landscaping plants in a current Eagle Scouts project approved by WSDOT/City of Bremerton Public Works & Parks located at SR-303, on the NW Side of Warren Avenue Bridge in Bremerton, WA. Trees contribute to neighborhood livability by reducing city noise and glare, and by calming and slowing traffic while they improve habitat for endangered fish, migratory birds, and other wildlife.
Every 1,000 urban trees we plant in the Northwest today will save our region more than a million dollars in stormwater management, pollution abatement, and energy costs. (Source: Center for Urban Forest Research, Davis, California). |
