Kitsap YMCA executive director honored

In recognition of 25 years of outstanding leadership and devotion to the community of Kitsap Family YMCA, Glen Godfrey was recently honored with a Certificate of Leadership from the Armed Services YMCA national office.

Some of the more visible programs Godfrey has carried out include three building projects, starting with closing the old outdated YMCA structure and constructing the new Kitsap Family YMCA in 1987. Seven years later, he raised $425,000 to add a fully-equipped weight room and aerobics room.

The $300,000 Annex project that began in 1989 by Godfrey expanded a decade later with the addition of a nursery/child care area and kitchen area.

He is currently working on the latest fund-raising effort for the non-profit Kitsap Family YMCA, the Teen/Youth Room Expansion project. The project will offer a computer lab for after school homework, teen cooking classes, youth fitness, the Book and Breakfast program, teen leadership and development training, community service options, and supervised socialization areas for board and table games.

Under Godfrey’s guidance, the budget figure of $632,000 that is needed for the project is now within reach, with grants, donations, pledges and gifts still pending.
