Sage is cast in the spotlight

Bainbridge Island’s Sage Manufacturing will be featured in a cable television show, “Made in America,” hosted by former “Cheers” star and Vashon Island resident, John Ratzenberger. The show, which can be seen on the Travel Channel and Discovery Channel, focus on manufacturers that continue to make products in the United States – particularly those by hand. A date for the show’s airing has not been set.

“We thought we’d be perfect for them,” said Sage’s Director of Operations Wray Lertora. “They like to show hand-made stuff and that’s what we do.” Sage is the nation’s leading maker of specialty fly-fishing rods, producing about 60,000 annually at its Day Road facility.

Sage currently has 135 employees following its merger last year with Reddington, which makes another brand of fly fishing rods and apparel. The company is owned by the Joshua Green Corp. and has been a fixture on Bainbridge since 1980.

Lertora said the company might also be a part of a future PBS series on fly fishing. “We don’t mind the good PR,” he added.
