County citizens are shaping the Kitsap County of tomorrow with todays solutions to extremely complex problems. There is no simple or painless solution, especially when the answer demands the meticulous weaving together of both economic and environmental interests. With corresponding opportunities relying on this delicate balance, common sense, accountability and action are crucial touchstones in navigating the map on the roadway to the future.
The nucleus of much of todays public debate revolves steadfastly around lifestyle questions: What level of environmental maintenance or protection is needed? How do we invite growth and commerce without spoiling the rural atmosphere Kitsapers enjoy? How do we diversify the economy in the face of military transformation and consolidation? How can local government collaborate to improve resource efficiency and enhance service delivery? These are the common sense questions that fill my days and fill my mind as I drift off to sleep each night.
The reality is that society, the economy and the environment changes regardless of our desire to endure that change. Ours is the opportunity to make the most of these challenges by using lessons learned when solutions dont work out the way wed like. We must plan for and invite appropriate growth using sound reasoning and good old good judgement.
Throughout the summer, the Board of Kitsap County Commissioners and the Planning Commission will hear and consider testimony about amendments to the county comprehensive plan and its supporting ordinances. Our desire is to listen closely to all sides of each issue and integrate this information into a complete picture of the whole problem before making a decision.
As we discuss community planning and futures, participants will present their best rationale for their positions. We, as citizens, have an opportunity to make our community stronger through this process and by respecting and welcoming the input of others.
As we steer our way on the road to the future, my hope is that we not be preoccupied by the distractions along the roadway shoulder. While construction on our road to the future may cause a few detours, well take full advantage of the opportunities at our destination ahead a strong economy coupled with the beautiful surroundings for every Kitsap family and future generation to enjoy. |
