Poplars Motel to become senior housing

The Poplars Motel on Silverdale Way will soon become affordable apartments for seniors according to the Kitsap Consolidated Housing Authority (KCCHA). The Housing Authority, which intends to transform its 32,431 square feet into 32 one-bedroom units, made the decision to purchase the 35-year old motel by this July, contingent on financing.

The Olsen family has owned The Poplars since it was built in 1968. They recently approached County Commissioner Patty Lent with the suggestion it might be an appropriate site for some badly needed senior housing.

It’s also possible the site could be another key component of the future library and center site, which was recently acquired by Kitsap County. The county already operates the A-frame community center and some District Court functions in the building adjacent to the Poplars. There is also a Sheriff’s office precinct building on the other side of the community center.
