Kitsap County was one of 65 employers throughout Washington State and the only employer in Kitsap County, to receive the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the U.S. Department of Transportations Best Workplaces for Commuters award.
The Federal award acknowledges the Countys commitment to creating a commuter-friendly environment for employees and for their contribution to improving air quality and reducing traffic congestion.
Kitsap Transit Transportation Program Supervisor, Bob Ferguson, nominated the county for the award saying, Kitsap Countys rideshare and parking program has made a positive impact on our local environment, as well as, freeing up parking spaces for the general public.
With assistance from Kitsap Transit, the county created a paid parking program in 2001. Monies collected from parking support the countys rideshare program, which provides a subsidy for employees who use a vanpool, bus or passenger-only ferry to get to work.
Kitsap employers interested in seeking innovative solutions to reduce traffic congestion, air pollution, and energy consumption associated with their employees commute trip can call the EPAs Best Workplaces for Commuters program.
