The Suquamish Tribe donated a total of $3,000 to three local food banks to assist food distribution to the needy during the recent holiday season. The Tribe sent checks for $1,000 each to Fishline of Poulsbo, Sharenet of Kingston, and the Suquamish Food Bank in downtown Suquamish. The funds came from the Suquamish Tribes Appendix X Fund which is financed by a percentage of gaming machine revenues from the Suquamish Clearwater Casino. The Tribal Council, on a quarterly basis, distributes one-half of the fund to support Tribal activities and the other half for non-tribal, non-profit group and charity activities.
The Suquamish Tribal Council felt it was important to contribute to the local food banks to support their efforts to feed the hungry said Wayne George, Executive Director, Suquamish Tribe. Some of our tribal people have needed these services in the past and they were always there for them
we hope that our donation will help these organizations continue to help the greater community.
The Tribal Council drew from the tribal side of the Appendix X Fund to fund the food bank donations. In December, the Tribal Council also distributed the entire non-tribal side of the Appendix X Fund quarterly allocation, totaling over $105,000, to local non-profits. The Suquamish Tribe encourages non-profit organizations and charitable groups to apply to the Suquamish Tribes Appendix X Community Awards Program. However, organizations are encouraged to apply for charitable causes that are not within these priority areas.
