Septic Systems for the nearshore
environment... A look beneath the surface

Many populated areas of Kitsap County, within urban growth areas (UGAs) are served by municipal sewage systems. However, in a large percentage of rural and semi-rural areas, municipal sewage service is not available. This is particularly true of a large majority of waterfront or nearshore properties in Kitsap and Mason counties. These properties are commonly served by private sewage disposal systems i.e.... an on site septic system (OSS) where natural bacterial action decomposes human waste products into environmentally acceptable components.

Critical maintenance and upkeep of these systems is the responsibility of the property owners. As we better understand the complex ecological functions of Puget Sound, we are becoming increasingly aware of responsibilities nearshore property owners shoulder.

The Liberty Bay Foundation understands that nearshore septic systems are but one component contributing to the environmental health of our Bays. To help concerned private owners understand and manage their OSS, the Liberty Bay Foundation and Lemolo Citizens Club in conjunction with the Kitsap County Health District will host a workshop with qualified experts to help us understand the functions and maintenance of private septic systems.

This informative workshop will be held Jan. 20, at the Poulsbo Fire Station meeting room. 911 NE Liberty Road, in Poulsbo
