Washingtons jobless rate remains one of the highest in the nation. Economists estimate 223,000 people are looking for work, and more than 3,000 residents have drawn unemployment benefits for more than a year. What does that mean for our state?
Does the drop in manufacturing jobs reflect a temporary downturn or a permanent shift? Will laid-off workers be rehired when business activity picks up or will they be forced to seek new employment in other sectors? And where are the jobs? In essence, has Washingtons economy changed forever?
Discover answers to these questions at the 9th Annual Economic Symposium on Nov. 14 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Washington State Department of Labor and Industries auditorium 7273 Linderson Way S.W. in Tumwater. The Washington State Employment Security Departments Labor Market and Economic Analysis branch presents the event.
Local and nationally known economists will discuss the effects of layoffs on Washington and the potential for job recovery, reveal new labor market tools available to assist job seekers and employers, and answer questions. As with last years symposium, this years event is expected to be very popular; registration is limited to 150.
Registration is $20 and includes lunch. For more information, a complete agenda and speaker lineup or to register online, visit www.workforceexplorer.com or call (360) 438-4800. |
