O’Brien grows staff to work helping
build a sustainable 21st century

While the field of green building has experienced rapid growth, Bainbridge Island’s O’Brien & Company, Inc., has built a team of talented staff to help governments, organizations, and design and construction professionals master this complex field.

O’Brien & Company, founded in 1991 by Kathleen O’Brien, is a nationally recognized leader in sustainable design and construction consulting, education, and research. Several years ago, O’Brien & Company President Kathleen O’Brien was hired by the Homebuilders Association of Kitsap County (HBA) to design its green building program, Build a Better Kitsap (now called Built Green). The award-winning program was adopted by the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) as the model for its national green building effort.

O’Brien also received the Built Environment Award from Sustainable Seattle, a nonprofit agency dedicated to protecting and improving the long-term health and vitality of the Puget Sound region. Since 1991, O’Brien & Company has grown to a firm of six consultants experienced in all aspects of sustainable development, including four LEED™ Accredited Professionals.

In July, the firm welcomed Project Associate Katherine Morgan. Her 16 years of prior professional experience in planning, research, education, program development, policy, communications, and public participation has spanned numerous audiences, issues, and regions.

Project Associate Rebekah Henderson has earned the Sustainable Building Advisor Certificate from Seattle Central Community College and her certification as LEEDTM Accredited Professional from the US Green Building Council.

Senior Project Associate Jane Simmons recently earned certification as a Construction Documents Technologist (CDT) from the Construction Specifications Institute. Alistair Jackson, who has been working with O’Brien & Company since last fall, brings eight years of experience as an internal sustainability consultant in both established international companies and start-ups. He is also a graduate of the Sustainable Building Advisor Certificate Program.

This past spring, O’Brien was recognized for establishing sustainability education programs for architects, engineers and builders throughout Washington in the early 1990s.

According to O’Brien, “O’Brien & Company is committed to promoting informed sustainable development. Our staff are not only dedicated to this ideal, but they bring the best mix of knowledge and experience to help our clients achieve it.”
