Kitsap geologist inks book contract

Port Orchard consulting geologist William C. Haneberg has signed a contract to write a book on mathematical and computational geoscience for the German publisher Springer-Verlag.

The book, “Computational Geoscience with Mathematica,” will show how the computer program Mathematica can be used to create sophisticated scientific graphics, perform statistical calculations, solve equations, and develop computer simulations of geologic processes such as landslides and groundwater flow.

Currently in preparation, the book will be distributed worldwide beginning in late 2003 or early 2004. In addition to the traditional paper format, each book will contain an interactive electronic version that will allow readers to perform their own calculations and customize examples provided by the author.

Springer-Verlag (www.springer.de), with headquarters in Heidelberg and U.S. offices in New York, is one of the world’s leading publishers of advanced science and math books. It counts 126 Nobel Prize winners among its authors.

Mathematica, published by Wolfram Research, Inc. (www.wolfram.com), is a state-of-the-art computer program with capabilities that include three-dimensional graphics, numerical calculations, and symbolic mathematics such as algebra and calculus.
